- Kaikōura is a small coastal town in Aotearoa New Zealand, known for its rich marine life .
- A deep ocean canyon lies close to shore, creating a highly productive marine environment .
- Kaikōura has a long history of connection between people and the ocean, including strong ties for local Māori and a community reliant on fishing and tourism.
- Over time, the marine environment faced increasing pressures, such as overfishing, coastal land use, and pollution.
- Te Korowai is a local group consisting of different stakeholders, who are stewards for the local marine environment and work to tackle these pressures . . Their key achievement is The Kaikōura ( Te Tai o Marokura ) Marine Management Act, passed in 2014, to protect Kaikōura’s marine environment .
