At the Escola Lumen, our participation in the ProBleu project has triggered an exciting environmental journey. Our main objective? Protect marine life, especially sea turtles, and understand the impact of human activity on aquatic ecosystems. - Learning through action: The students explored how local rivers affect the sea and why it is important to protect aquatic life. A memorable excursion to a nearby creek allowed them to test the water quality and observe native species. This hands-on experience was followed by a visit from a marine biologist, who introduced the students to the local aquatic fauna. This initiative was supported by Taigua, Funbrain and Terrassa City Council, making it a powerful real-world learning opportunity. - Get to know marine life first-hand To delve deeper into marine biodiversity, we visited the CRAM (Marine Animal Rescue Center) and the Barcelona Aquarium, where students saw sea turtles and other marine species up close. In the Port of Mataró, they examined the waste washed away by the water (plastic, fishing nets and other debris), which made the problem of pollution very tangible. - Expert inspiration We had the honour of having guest speakers such as Isabel Forner and Sylvia Earle (CSIC), and Núria Salán and Eva Vidal (ESEIAAT-UPC), who inspired the students with their scientific work and their passion for protecting the planet. - Celebrating Water with Europe On World Water Day, we share our learning with European Erasmus+ partner students from Poland and Italy, joining forces in awareness-raising activities on water conservation and marine ecosystems. - Creative experiments in the classroom Using ProBleu's educational kits, students built simple water filters, modeled the water cycle, and designed engaging experiments to understand the impact of pollution. - Commitment and challenges A key success? The enthusiastic participation of our students. They are curious, motivated, and eager to make a difference. One of the challenges has been adapting some materials for younger students, but we have created interactive games and simplified the resources to meet their needs. - ProBleu Community Days As part of our commitment to outreach, we organized ProBleu Community Days to spread the word about the project to families, local organizations, and the city. These open events included interactive workshops, exhibitions, student-led presentations, and hands-on activities. They provided a platform for students to share their learnings and raise awareness among the citizens of Terrassa about marine protection and sustainability.
