6) The ocean and humans are inextricably interconnected People need the ocean for food, jobs, culture, fun and more! By burning fossil fuels to make plastic and energy we are changing the climate and are harming the ecosystems and animals within the ocean. Although the climate has changed for as long as Earth has existed, it is now happening faster, because of the amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses, like methane, that we are emitting.
