In urban areas, there is more surface runoff because the ground is often covered with concrete, tarmac, and buildings. These hard, impermeable surfaces stop water from soaking into the soil. Instead, rainwater rushes over the surface, picking up oil, litter, chemicals, and other pollutants, which are then carried into freshwater ecosystems. Human activities in cities can also increase pollution entering water, these include using: pet pest control, cleaning products, garden fertiliser and pesticide use.
