Biodiversity is part of the solution to climate change . Forests and wetlands act as buffers against extreme storms and flooding related to climate change. Many ecosystems also act as carbon stores , removing CO2 from the atmophere . Ecosystems function best and are most resilient to climate change when their biodiversity is intact. There are many reasons biodiversity is important. Why is biodiversity important? A more biodiverse ecosystem is a strong ecosystem . Humans depend on ecosystems for; fresh water, pollination , soil fertility and stability, food and medicine . Biodiversity is good for the economy . Around 75% of global food crops rely on animals and insects such as bees to pollinate them. Many of these pollinator populations are in decline — which could put more than US$ 235 billion of agricultural products at risk. Freshwater Biodiversity Overview (12-15) 6/16
