Can sound travel under water? Experiment: can sound travel under water? Equipment required A small aquarium or large glass container filled with water Waterproof Bluetooth speaker - check in advance it is waterproof (IPX-7 certified) Mobile phone or other device that allows to stream music through the speaker. Method Ask the class if they think sound can travel in water or not. Can we hear anything under water? Start playing music through the speaker. Then submerge it into water. Can you still hear the music? Learning points Sound travels faster in water than in air because of how the tiny particles in each material behave! In both water and air, sound moves as a wave that pushes particles together and then spreads them apart. Think of it like people standing in a line - when the first person bumps into the second, the bump passes all the way down the line. Sound travels about four times faster in water than in air!
