PROTECTION OF THE OHRID TROUT AND BELVICA IN LAKE OHRID on 26.12.2024 We had the special privilege of having representatives from the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia, specifically representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, who gave special weight and substance to the panel, then scientific organizations such as the Hydrobiological Institute-Ohrid, Department of Salmonid Fauna, Practical Fisheries and Aquaculture - Fisheries Expert, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, civic associations, primary schools, secondary schools and many other institutions. This confirms that our initiative has been recognized as a significant step in the fight for the protection of natural heritage. The goal of the panel was to raise public awareness about the importance of protecting Lake Ohrid, with an emphasis on its unique biodiversity and the specific challenges related to the conservation of Ohrid trout and brook trout – endemic species of exceptional importance for the lake’s ecosystem. This event was organized as part of the ProBleu project, funded by the European Union, which is aimed at the protection of water resources, environmental awareness and sustainable development. Objectives of the panel 1. Awareness raising: Informing the public about the current problems and challenges related to Lake Ohrid and its biodiversity. 2. Scientific approach: Presentation of scientific research and data related to the state of endemic species. 3. Community activation: Involving various stakeholders – ministries from the Government of the Republic of North Macedonia, institutions, educational institutions, non-governmental organizations, media and citizens – in a discussion on the conservation of the lake. 4. Proposals for future steps: Development of specific recommendations for sustainable policies and measures for the protection of the lake and its flora and fauna.
