What is happening to biodiversity? The main driver of biodiversity loss is humans’ land use – mainly for food production . When land is converted for agriculture or for building, wildlife loses their habitat and face extinction. Humans also change ecosystems by removing habitat and over predating on one species for food. Reducing one species can have knock on negative effects on an ecosystem. Climate change is also playing a role in biodiversity decline. Climate change has altered marine, terrestrial, and freshwater ecosystems around the world. The change to ecosystems means species struggle to live where they onced called home. This has caused the loss of species and increased diseases. Biodiveristy is dropping - but why? Freshwater Biodiversity Overview (12-15) 8/16
